PRP/PRFM Hair Restoration Therapy

Selphyl PRFM is a simple, no downtime series of treatments to help people with thinning hair using their own platelets. The Selphyl PRFM system allows for prolonged release of platelet growth factors in the scalp which stimulates stem cells, prolongs dermal papillae cell survival, and increases angiogenesis. These factors combine to prolong the Anlagen phase of hair growth and shorten the catagen (resting) phase. The result is increased hair thickness and hair follicle survival.

Additional Information

What is PRP/PRFM hair restoration therapy?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp.

What can I expect?

PRP or platelet-rich plasma is a preparation of platelets – taken from a person through a small blood draw, which is then put in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from our red and white blood cells – prior to treatment where it is reinfected into the scalp. It is a simple in-office procedure with no downtime. Once centrifuged, the plasma is reported to be 300% to 700% enriched with platelets concentration to more than 1 million platelets per microliter. Platelets not only provide coagulation but they also secrete several growth factors(proteins like platelet-derived growth factors, insulin-like growth factors, epidermal growth factors, keratinocyte growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, etc.) and other cell-to-cell activation molecules. The growth factors within, and released by the platelets, act on the stem cells found at the base of the hair follicles.

Am I a candidate for PRFM for Hair Restoration?

PRP or Selphyl PRFM is designed for those individuals who have some thinning of hair on the scalp and is not recommended for complete balding. It has been shown that platelet plasma growth factors lead to a significant improvement in hair density and stimulation of growth when the hair follicles (in hair transplantation) were pre-treated with platelet-derived growth factors.

Expected Downtime

There is no expected downtime with PRP/PRFM hair therapy.

How many treatments will I need?

PRP therapy requires three treatments 4–6 weeks apart or more. Maintenance treatments could be required every 4–6 months. Results may vary.
